                                  CENTENNIAL OF FIRST AIR RACE TO BE CELEBRATED

 

                                  The 100th anniversary of the world’s first air race—Reims, France, 1909—will
                                  be the focus of the 25th annual International Air Racing History Symposium,
                                  May 1-2, 2009, in Cleveland, Ohio.

                                  The Society of Air Racing Historians, Inc., will present a series of illustrated
                                  presentations by recognized authorities, to cover the full historical range
                                  of pylon and cross-country competition. 

                                 1. 1909-1913 Pre-World War I air races, by Michael Gough of the National Air & Space Museum.

                                2. The 1913-1931 Schneider Cup Races for seaplanes, by Derek James, of England.

                                3. The 1920-1925 Pulitzer Trophy Races, by Timothy Weinschenker, of Michigan.

                                4. The 1929-1939 “Golden Age of Air Racing” by Bill Meixner, of Ohio.

                                5. The 1946-1949 Cleveland National Air Races, by Kevin Grantham, of Maryland.

                                6. The 1964-2008 Reno Air Race Era, by two-time Unlimited Class winning pilot Bruce Lockwood,
                                   of California.

 

                              The Symposium will be held in the 6th floor Skyline Ballroom of the Holiday
                              Inn-Airport, on W. 150th St., Cleveland, beginning Friday evening and
                              extending through Saturday. The room will be livened up by displays of scale models of racers,
                              paintings and drawings, posters of classic races, etc.
